This fieldtrip will focus on the basalt geology and geomorphology of the Drakensberg mountains of eastern Lesotho, which is part of the southern African Great Escarpment. It will examine the basalt stratigraphy, weathering properties and geologic control on regional topography and relief; and examine evidence for past and contemporary geomorphic processes, including periglacial mass movements, frost shattering and formation of patterned ground, and the role of lightning. This is a post-conference trip that will start and end at Durban King Shaka International Airport. Field leaders will be Jasper Knight and Stefan Grab (both Wits University). Accommodation will be at Sani Top Backpackers, which is basic but comfortable. All food will be provided. Sleeping bags are not needed but warm clothes and mountain walking gear are necessary.
