Geoscience for environmental management

Society is faced with many issues and problems that are caused or influenced by the Earth and its processes. These include the sustainable use and supply of natural resources such as minerals and water; risks arising from hazards such as landslides, subsidence, pollution and contamination and the reduction and mitigation of these; and adaptation to environmental (including climate) change. These challenges require a sound understanding of natural systems but also appropriate legislation, regulation, guidance and examples of good practices. But these are only of use if they are communicated to the relevant audiences in appropriate ways to guide society towards sustainable practices and decisions. This session is sponsored by the Commission on Geoscience for Environmental Management of the IUGS which has working groups on; climate change adaptation; drinking water; dust; gold and mercury; land subsidence and ground water; man made strata and geopollution; and natural hazards and territorial sustainability. Contributions on these topics are invited but the session will extend to all aspects of environmental management, including planning and pollution control, and communication of geoscience advice to politicians, administrators and the general public.
