Past Global Climate Change In The Himalaya and Future Implications
|
Himalaya has been formed by the collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates some 50 million years back. The evidences of past climate change since Neoproterozoic to Recent are well documented in the Indian Himalaya from Ladakh in the west and Sikkim in the northeastern Himalaya. The major paleoclimate changes recorded include the Neoproterozoic glaciation (Snow Ball Earth), Ordovicain - Silurian cooling, Carboniferous - Permian glaciation, Paleocene - Eocene Thermal Event, Last Glacial Maxima, Little Ice Age and the recent global warming and melting of the glaciers in the Himalaya. These recent climate change is also triggering the devastating natural disasters such as GLOF (Glacial Lake Outburst Flood), which occurred in the Kedarnath shrine in June 2013. This session will discuss all the global paleoclimatic changes occurring in India and elsewhere on Earth and the future implications on climate change as indicated by the IPCC recently.
