Symposium Details

Title Description Convenors
Critical Metals in Intracontinental Geodynamic Settings This symposium, under the “Critical Metals – a Global Perspective” theme, will welcome all contributions on the subject of critical metal deposits formed in intracontinental geodynamic settings. There are a range of methods for assessing criticality, as reviewed by Gunn (2014), and this session will not be prescriptive in its definition of which metals are considered critical. Many critical metal deposits are found in intracontinental settings, where they may be formed in association with igneous and/or hydrothermal activity, or may be generated through sedimentary and weathering processes. Examples include platinum-group elements, rhenium, and cobalt associated with large-scale mafic layered intrusions; rare earth elements and niobium associated with alkaline igneous magmatism, carbonatites, and IOCG deposits; and lithium, beryllium and tantalum associated with post-collisional pegmatites. Talks on all aspects of the metallogenesis of these deposits will be welcomed, including specific deposit-focussed studies as well as wider investigation of the fundamental controls governing enrichment of critical metals in intracontinental settings.
