The Crustal Gold Cycle | Gold occurs in a great variety of deposit types, most important of which are the Witwatersrand-type, orogenic-type, porphyry and epithermal deposits. Their secular distribution and relative economic significance in terms of gold endowment reflect not only a wide range of transport media and trapping mechanisms but also major changes in the principal gold-concentrating processes and the re-working of crustal gold throughout Earth history. Recent work has shown that sequestration of gold from the mantle into the continental crust followed overall crustal growth rate, and first large-scale (pre-) concentration of gold into crustal rocks was essentially controlled by the evolution of the atmosphere and biosphere. This symposium will deal with all aspects of the concentration and remobilization of gold into the various gold deposit types, including systematic changes in the style of gold mineralization from the Archaean to the Present. | Hartwig Frimmel and Lynnette Greyling |
