Durability testing of barrier materials

A question frequently asked about geomembranes and GCLs is “how long will they last?” Geomembranes of different natures (High density polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, ethylene propylene-diene-terpolymer, bituminous) have been successfully installed in the past 30 to 40 years in a variety of environmental and hydraulic applications. The use of GCLs is more recent (20 years) but proved also to be suitable to ensure lining in a variety of applications. Designers need to know, if available which are the testing methods able to tell how long the geomembranes and GCLs will last, which properties shall be specified (physical, chemical, etc.) and what are the minimum acceptable values. The objective of this session will be to bring the available knowledge and the state of –the art information in this matter.
