Sustainable Geoscience: embedding Earth stewardship in geo-education
|
Geoscience is uniquely equipped to help with sustainable solutions to many of the most critical issues facing society, notably energy, mineral resources, waste disposal, water, soil, climate change and natural hazards. Yet few university geoscience students receive courses in sustainability. So how do we ensure that the principles and practices of Earth stewardship become as central a theme in geo-education as Earth exploitation? What are the ways in which emerging ideas on sustainable geoscience can be integrated with traditional Earth science curriculum? This session will explore both the conceptual and theoretical aspects of sustainability thinking that might underpin geoscience teaching, as well as showcase good practice in bringing sustainable geoscience to the university classroom or field environment.
