Tectono-thermal evolution of Gondwana: suturing of a supercontinent | This session focusses on tectono-thermal crustal processes related to the Late Neoproterozoic to Cambrian supercontinent assembly of Gondwana. The aim is to further our understanding of metamorphic and tectonic processes that were involved in the formation of the main collisional suture zones of Gondwana (e.g. East African – Antarctic, Kuunga, Brasiliano-Damara orogenies). Resolving multiple Neoproterozoic – Cambrian (e.g. Pan-African) metamorphic events that resulted in crustal reworking of older Archean-Proterozoic terrains will be explored. This includes investigating crustal growth, tectonic exhumation and other geodynamic mechanisms recorded in Gondwana’s suture zones to shed light on supercontinent assembly. We invite multi-disciplinary field based studies that integrates novel techniques in metamorphic petrology, structural geology, thermodynamic modelling, geochronology and isotope geochemistry. | Tamer Abu-Alam and Eugene G.
