Field-Based Geoscience Education: A YES Network Comparison | The best geoscientists are those who have seen the most rocks in the field. In the evolving discipline of geoscience education, field experiences remain critical. No matter what field of geoscience a student is trained in, the context and perspective of seeing rocks in the field is absolutely essential to interpretation and understanding that might occur through laboratory work or computer modeling. Increasingly wide availability of international travel and collaboration often lead to design of field based educational opportunities for students. This session will explore the pedagogical strategies and challenges associated with providing field based learning experiences as well as the logistical considerations that are involved. Presenters are encouraged to share their experiences and successes in providing field trips, field based courses, or field based research experiences for students. We encourage discussion of qualitative and quantitative approaches to assess achievement of learning objectives in field based courses.
