Cretaceous sea-level changes and Asia-Pacific Cretaceous Ecosystems (IGCP 609, IGCP 608, ICDP Songliao basin)

The Cretaceous is believed to have differed from our present world in multiple respects, such as climatic conditions of a prolonged greenhouse world, palaeoclimate and palaeoenvironmental changes and patterns, palaeoceanographic conditions, and significant ecosystems changes. IGCP 608 aims to delineate Cretaceous ecosystems and how they responded to the paleo-environmental changes that affected the South-East Asian and adjacent Western Pacific region. Major topics include variations of Cretaceous terrestrial and marine environments and the evolution of Cretaceous terrestrial and marine ecosystems in Asia and the Western Pacific. IGCP 609 addresses correlation, causes and consequences of significant short-term sea-level changes during the last major greenhouse episode of Earth history. Predictions of future sea-level rise due to ongoing global change need a better understanding of the record, the causes and the feedback processes of past sea-level changes, especially during greenhouse and hothouse climate episodes such as the Cretaceous.
