Evolution of Archaean cratonic cover successions | Intracontinental volcano-sedimentary successions that unconformably overlie more ancient basement rocks are well developed in several cratons that experienced stability relatively early in their geological history. Classic examples are the Mesoarchaean Pongola and Witwatersrand Supergroups of the Kaapvaal craton and the Neoarchaean Ventersdorp and Fortescue Supergroups of the Kaapvaal and Pilbara cratons, respectively. Exceptional preservation and low metamorphic grade makes them a prime recorder of Archaean surface processes. While representing the oldest intracontinental basins and large igneous provinces, the tectonostratigraphic evolution of these successions remains poorly constrained. This session invites contributions that explore the unique record of Archaean cratonic cover successions and provide constraints on their development in space and time. | Allan Wilson and Axel Hofmann |
