The Barberton greenstone belt and drilling into the cradle of life | The Barberton greenstone belt has emerged as one of the classic Archaean geological sites worldwide in which to study the nature and processes of early Earth history. Well-preserved volcano-sedimentary successions provide an exceptional record of Archaean surface processes, such as atmosphere and seawater composition, early impact history, and the habitat of early life. This session will investigate the geochemical, mineralogical, environmental and biological evolution of the Earth’s surface and immediate subsurface from its oldest volcano-sedimentary record and incorporates recent findings from the ICDP-funded Barberton drilling project “Peering into the cradle of life”. | Axel Hofmann, Paul Mason and Nick Arndt |
