Stratigraphic Forward Modelling |
Forward numerical modelling of sedimentary processes had its initial development in the 1960’s. Computational developments over the next 50 years led to vastly improved ability to test quantitative models of geological processes, both as tools to test stratigraphic hypotheses, and for commercial prediction of rock properties in frontier basins. Three-dimensional predictive stratigraphic forward models of stratal architecture, and lithological distribution, at scales from cm to km have now been developed for many types of basin and depositional system. Forward numerical modelling of sedimentary processes is also an enabling technology for the link between hindcasting a modern marine or lacustrine basin up to the present and then predicting future development as a function of multiple climate-change hypotheses. This symposium aims to provide the global earth science community with insight into recent developments in stratigraphic forward modelling , case studies, issues, and a discussion of future directions. The oral session will be complemented with a poster session to allow extension of important scientific discussions in a less formal setting. |
