OneGeology |
OneGeology is a global initiative with the objectives to 1) be the provider of geosciences data globally, 2) to ensure exchange of know-how and skills so all can participate, and 3) to use the global profile of 1G to increase awareness of the geosciences and their relevance among professional and general public. Currently OneGeology is focused on serving geoscience data from individual countries to create a multi-thematic global geoscience data resource based on new international OGC standards (GeoSciML 4.0). By complying to use of these standards, geoscience data provided by participants can be shared and integrated across the continents and world with other organisations. OneGeology is a distributed data system, which means that data are archived at data origin (at providers’ servers) and are served on demand directly to the web client through the OneGeology Portal. The Portal is at the same time an entry point for those that seek the reliable access to the authoritative geoscience data, such as information on mineral and other (water, energy etc.) resources, geohazards, and other relevant geological related information. Understanding our world, the geology beneath our feet and environmental challenges related to geology calls for accessibility of geoscience data, at least at the general level. This Symposium is focused on enhancing African engagement in OneGeology with the focus on capacity building. |
