Crust formation and recycling from the Hadean to the late Archaean: The transition to plate tectonics
|
There are still many outstanding questions regarding the petrogenesis and tectono-metamorphic evolution of the Earth’s early continental crust and the dynamics of its formation, recycling and destruction. This session will discuss the origin and evolution of the Hadean to late Archaean (>4-2.5 Ga) continental crust and subcrustal lithosphere on the basis of field relationships, geochronology and isotopes, the geochemical record and petrology preserved in rocks and minerals, and geodynamic modelling. Some important questions to be addressed are: What was the rate at which the early crust grew? What were the volumes of crust present during the Hadean and Archaean? What was the role of plate tectonics in generating Earth’s earliest crust? Contributions on the petrogenesis of Archaean mafic-ultramafic-felsic rocks in greenstone belts and associated granitoids (TTGs) will be particularly welcome. This session is co-sponsored by the International Precambrian Research Centre of China (IPRCC).
