Geological and tectonic evolution of the Arctic
|
The Circumpolar Arctic is one of the last geological frontiers of the Earth. With the increased demands for mineral resources, exploration of the Arctic frontiers has increased in importance to the geoscientific agenda. Since 2003 the geological surveys of Canada, Denmark/Greenland, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Russia and USA have cooperated on the compilation of a series of Circum-Arctic geological and geophysical maps. Recent national and international exploration programs have resulted in new basic knowledge of key areas of the Circumpolar Arctic, and given new evidences of the geological history of the Arctic regions. The session will provide updated geological knowledge and a synthesis of the mineral resources potential of the extensive Circumpolar region.
