Gas hydrates - a major unconventional energy resource: when will they be produced? | Gas hydrates have attracted the scientific community due to their abundant occurrences in outer continental margins and permafrost regions; their role in climate change; their effect on seafloor stability; and their huge energy potential. The energy potential is so huge that even 15% production can meet the world's energy requirement for about 200 years at the current rate of consumption. Recent success in production tests of methane from gas hydrates reservoirs in onshore Alaska and offshore Japan have spread tremendous interests in national programs of many countries, and provide great hopes to meet the World's burgeoning energy requirement for the next generation. Thus, the session invites papers on Geo-scientific investigation of gas hydrates; feasible production technologies and flow assurance; and possible impact on environment. | Kalachand Sain, Richard Coffin and Ingo Pecher |
