Global Geoscience Professionalism and Geoethics

The notifications to presenting authors confirming their specific date and time of presentation will be communicated the 20 August 2016.

Second Draft Preliminary programme is being updated per theme as the SPC signs them off.

The detailed draft day by day programme for each theme is being announced as it is being collated. These are still preliminary and will be finalised by the 20 August.

As this is the Second draft, please note that where there are abstract presenters not yet registered, these have now been removed from the programme.
Once removed, you will not be included in the abstracts or the programme. If your co-author is presenting, please contact the secretariat urgently to confirm and advise so that your paper can be moved to the correct presenter. Email 35igc@allevents.co.za if you have any queries or if you have in the interim managed to secure finances and registered.

Global Geoscience Professionalism and Geoethics

Much of the work of geoscientists results in output on which others in Society depend, either directly or indirectly. An important aspect of Geoscience for Society is therefore the ethical responsibility and accountability that falls to geoscientists globally, as they undertake their work.  This has given rise to the promulgation of statutes, codes of ethics, conduct and practice, and technical codes standards and guidelines, similar to those of many other professions.  These are promoted, developed, maintained and enforced by professional geoscience organisations (www.tg-ggp.org) and national and international standard setting and regulatory bodies. Geoethics is an interdisciplinary field that brings together Geosciences and Ethics; it involves both Earth and Planetary Sciences as well as applied ethics (www.icog.es/iageth).  Geoethics deals with the ethical, social and cultural implications of Earth Sciences education, research and practice, and with the social roles and responsibilities of geoscientists in conducting their activities (http://www.geoethics.org).

This theme at IGC will be represented by 5 symposia

  • The 5th International Professional Geology Conference (5IPGC)
    (convened by TG-GGP)
    • The 5th in a series of conferences providing a forum every four years for the discussion of professional aspects of geoscience practice.  The conferences are organised (usually as part of another conference or event) by an international network of Professional Geoscience Organisations that has, since 2012, been formalised as the IUGS Task Group on Global Geoscience Professionalism (TG-GGP).
  • Geoethics: General Aspects and Case Studies
    (Convened by IAPG)
    • Geoethics consists of research and reflection on the values which underpin appropriate behaviours and practices, wherever human activities interact with the geosphere. Geoethics deals with the ethical, social and cultural implications of geoscience education, research and practice and with the responsibility of geoscientists in conducting their professional activities. The aim of the symposium is to develop ethical and social perspectives on the challenges arising from human interaction with natural systems, by discussing theoretical aspects, by showing how geoscience organizations are dealing with geoethical issues and by understanding geoethical implications in geosciences through case-studies.
  • Geoethics - Teaching, Training and Communication
    (Convened by IAPG and TG-GGP)
    • This symposium explores aspects of teaching geoethics, training geoscientists and communicating geoethical values and geoscience professional expertise to the wider public.
  • Geoethics and Resourcing Future Generations
(Convened by IAPG, GSL, EFG, EGS)
    • Meeting the resource needs of future generations is one of the greatest challenges facing global society. The scientific and technical skills of geoscientists are essential in addressing the complex challenges of meeting ‘geo-resource’ needs sustainably. Their decisions and activities have significant ethical implications affecting society and the environment, and geoethics provides a valuable framework in which to consider the values on which we should base ethical professional behaviours, and how these should be put into practice. This symposium presents general considerations and practical experiences to show how geosciences are working for the benefit of society on the frontline.
  • Inconvenient truths and ethical dilemma - towards a Cape Town Accord
    (Convened by the Theme Champions)
    • This symposium comprises 3 sessions which will be run as panel discussions, covering up to 5 issues in each session:
      • What's the point of Geoethics?
      • What is wrong with our work environment?
      • Can the public trust geoscientists?

The topics to be discussed will be drawn from the symposia and sessions in the Global Geoscience Professionalism and Geoethics theme.
Our hope is that the outcome of these three discussion sessions will be to reach some consensus on the three key questions in the session titles, and that this consensus might be recorded in a "Cape Town Accord" whereby a common set of “ethics” and “code of professional conduct” together with a common framework on how we want “complaints” and “discipline” to be handled would be agreed.  These would be developed in line with the AGI Guidelines for Ethical Professional Conduct.
The format of the sessions will be for members of the panel to lead on each topic with a 5-10 minute presentation, followed by a 10-15 minute discussion involving the panel members and the audience..
